Mare Tranquility National Park
55 years ago on this day, mankind touched the moon for the very first time. In recognition of the Apollo 11 mission successfully landing on the lunar landscape, President Richard Nixon declared the landing site to be a national treasure. Three days after Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon, Mare Tranquility National Park was signed into existence. However, such a declaration being in clear violation of the Outer Space Treaty of 1967 (yes, it’s a really thing), Mare Tranquility National Park immediately underwent a severe identity crisis. Was it an American landmark? Was it an international treasure? Unable to decide, Mare Tranquility withdrew from society and undertook a hermitic existence.
